EcoQube C FAQs

What’s the size of the EcoQube C?

The EcoQube C is about 7.8" x 7.8" x 7.8" and about 1.5 gallons in volume.

Can we eat the plant grown in the EcoQube C?

While some people do eat the plant grown out of the EcoQube C, we do not recommend it for the following reasons:

1. The plant is used for filtration. Fish produce ammonia from their waste which in turn gets converted to nitrites through a natural biological process performed in your ecosystem. Those nitrites are then converted to nitrates through a secondary biological process which your plant then uses up as food. If removed, the main filtering mechanism on the EcoQube C will be removed as well which can lead to excess nitrate buildup and an imbalance in the ecosystem.

2. Aquarium products are not made for food consumption. Many people use aquarium fish food, dechlorinator and others products recommended by local fish stores that can be toxic to humans. Although we do not recommend it, if the plant grown out of the EcoQube C is used for food purposes, ensure that no potentially toxic products are used in your EcoQube C.

Is the compact UV sterilizer needed?

The aquaponics filter in the EcoQube was originally designed with commercial use in mind, so it can be scaled for food production without any further attachments needed. Additionally, a typical small aquarium will not require UV sterilization. However, if you'd like to keep your water extra clear and clean, the UV sterilizer can help act as a buffer for mistakes such as over-feeding or excess light that can lead to bacterial or algae blooms.

If you did not choose to purchase the compact UV sterilizer attachment with your EcoQube C, you can always order it here.

What plants are best for filtration?

If you're wondering what plant to go with, we 100% recommend the golden pothos ivy! It's easy to grow and maintain, and also is one of NASA's top 5 air filtering plants!

We recommend splicing a golden pothos clipping into your EcoQube C - instructions can be found here.

The golden pothos will grow for a long time with relatively little maintenance needed. However, if you wanted to grow an herb, you can also try splicing basil, mint, or green onions although these herbs do have shorter lifespans.

What fish/livestock are recommended for the EcoQube C?

We highly recommend keeping 1 Betta/ Siamese fighting fish because it thrives in room temperature. Other fish like guppies, endlers, white cloud mountain minnows, zebra danios can be kept in the EcoQube C as well but they each require specific water parameters.

We also recommend amano algae eating shrimp and algae eating nerite snails to keep the ecosystem pristine.

You can find additional accessories for your EcoQube C in our shop found here.

Will you offer add ons like driftwood, rocks, and plants shown in the videos and photos?

Yes! Due to high demand from previous campaigns, they're available in our shop found here.

How much energy does the EcoQube C consume?

Less than 7 watts when pump, light and UV is used. UV only needs to be on 2 hours/day and light only needs to be on 12 hours/day.

What is the compact UV sterilizer? What are the specs of the UV sterilizer? How does it work? Why is it so expensive?

The UV sterilizer is attached inline with the pump of your EcoQube. Its UV LED chip emits 235 nanometer wavelength ultraviolet light that kills everything that passes through. It helps keep the water extra clear and fish healthy by targeting algae, bacteria, and parasites that can make your fish sick.

While it is not necessary for maintaining a thriving aquarium, it can act as a buffer for common mistakes such as overfeeding or too much light which can cause bacterial and algae blooms. You can think of it as buying insurance for your EcoQube.

Our UV chip is adopted from spectrophotometers used in biotech devices and has a lifespan of 10,000 hours. We suggest you use it for 2 hours per day so it should last over 13 years. You can buy it as an add on attachment if you decide you want it later.

Does the EcoQube C work with salt water?

The EcoQube C was designed and tested for freshwater but it may work with a small mangrove in the filter. No guarantees there though =)

Will the lights ever burn out?

The LED chips we use are top of the line. Both UV and regular LED chips should last over 10 years at 9 hours/day run time (7 hours is suggested).

Does the EcoQube C need supplemental light like sunlight?

Sunlight is what usually causes imbalances in a aquarium or ecosystem. Sunlight has a lot of energy and can cause algae growth due to imbalances in the ecosystem. Keep it away from sunlight and your EcoQube C will never have green algae.

Are seeds and premium plant medium included?

Mint and Basil seeds are widely available for very affordable prices all over the world. Those are the 2 plants we recommend most!

You can also purchase from a trusted retailer like true leaf: https://www.trueleafmarket.com/collections/all-market-seeds

The plant medium WILL BE INCLUDED.

Should I grow from seed or should I splice (clone)?

Splicing works best in the C, since there is often not enough nutrients to kick start a plant grown from seed. We highly recommend splicing because it has a much higher success rate than growing from seeds (especially the golden pothos).

Kokedama, Basil, and Mint can be grown easily in the Air. Make sure to use our plant mediums and hydroponic fertilizer for best results. We'd love to hear about other plants you grow in your EcoQube Air at mj@aquadesigninnovations.com!

More information on Kokedama Bonzai Gardening can be found here!

Can you grow medical Cannabis in the EcoQube Air?

EcoQube has not tested the viability of this particular plant. We are, however, excited to see what experiments our customers in legal states may run with the EcoQube Air

Will the EcoQube Air need sunlight to grow the plants?

The full-spectrum LED light is programmed to give your plants the exact amount of light it needs to grow.

What is the size of the EcoQube Air?

The EcoQube Air is 220mm from left to right, 200mm from back to front, 378mm height (can round to 380).

What is Hydroponics?

Hydroponics is a method of agriculture that grows plants without the use of soil. Most often, hydroponically grown plants are planted in a medium that roots will anchor onto and grow throughout. Water infused with fertilizer is introduced to the system where it is absorbed by the plant medium and subsequently the roots. Using this technique, plants can be grown faster with a fraction of the amount of resources (water, energy, space) required to grow plants the traditional way, in soil.

What can I do with the phone app for the EcoQube Air?

We’re working hard on the phone app, trying to add as much functionality as possible. So far, we know that you’ll be able to control the LEDs of the EcoQube Air, changing the intensity of the grow lights and the color of the RGB (color) LEDs. You’ll also be able to program the light schedule of the EcoQube Air in order to sync up with your circadian rhythm.

Here’s a link the app guide!

Do I need to water the plants in the EcoQube Air?

No! The EcoQube air waters the plants for you. You will need to add water to the EcoQube Air, but only as needed. All of the water in the system is in a closed cycle, so the water will be lost at a very slow rate. We recommend you change the water once a month to refresh the fertilizer solution.

Do the plants or seeds come with the EcoQube Air?

No, but if you want to check out the best plant you can grow in your EcoQube Air, you can find it here.

If you'd like to grow basil, mint, golden pothos, or other plants, we recommend you find seeds from your local gardening store or an online retailer such as TrueLeaf. Alternatively, you can try splicing (cloning) using a clipping of a plant.

Does the EcoQube Air consumer a lot of energy?

No, the EcoQube Air is very energy efficient and uses a maximum of 13W. The only power used is in the energy efficient LEDs, air intake fans, and the small water pump and none of these components are on 24/7. In the UV model, a small amount of extra power will be used for this function.

Can any type of soil be used to grow plants in the EcoQube Air?

No, the EcoQube Air works hydroponically, meaning plants will grow soilessly, in a plant medium with water pumped through it.

How often will I have to change the water in the EcoQube Air?

You’ll only need to change the water in the Air once a month. The EcoQube Air comes installed with a Drain Spout for easy water changes. Simply pour new, fresh water into the water basin and increasing water pressure will push older water lower in the basin out through the spout.

Will I need to fertilize the plants in the EcoQube Air?

Yes, the plants in the EcoQube Air grow hydroponically, meaning fertilizer must be added to the system for best results. Fertilizer should be added to the water in the Water Basin. Fertilizer compatible with the EcoQube air will be available for purchase from the ADI store.

How often do you suggest changing the Air filter?

We suggest changing the air filter every 6-8 months. However, the filter condition is dependent on the type of environment that the EcoQube Air is in.

You can find replacement air filters here.

Is the UV sterilizer necessary?

The UV sterilizer is not necessary for the function of the EcoQube Air, rather it adds another stage of filtration for the air passing through the system. Ultraviolet radiation from the unit will kill any biological particles (bacteria, airborne viruses, mold spores) that makes it through the first two stages of filtration.

Do you put fish in the EcoQube Air?

No. Unlike the aquaponic EcoQube C, the EcoQube Air does not need or have any space for fish or any other aquatic animals.
